Everyone knows that a good massage can make you feel great. People of all ages are starting to understand the many benefits of massage therapy, including its role in overall health and well-being. Massage therapy has been shown to have beneficial effects on varying conditions including prenatal depression, preterm infants, full-term infants, autism, skin conditions, pain syndromes including arthritis and fibromyalgia, hypertension, autoimmune conditions including asthma and multiple sclerosis, immune conditions including HIV and breast cancer and aging problems including Parkinson’s and dementia (1). In addition, the pediatric massage research from the last decade suggests that massage therapy has positive effects on several pediatric conditions (2). These include preterm infant growth, psychological problems including aggression, gastrointestinal problems including constipation and diarrhea, painful conditions including burns and sickle cell, muscle tone disorders including cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, and chronic illnesses including diabetes, asthma cancer, and HIV (2).

According to the American Massage Therapy Association, the top 10 reasons to get a massage are:

  1. Relieve stress
  2. Relieve postoperative pain
  3. Reduce anxiety
  4. Manage low-back pain
  5. Help fibromyalgia pain
  6. Reduce muscle tension
  7. Enhance exercise performance
  8. Relieve tension headaches

  10. Ease symptoms of depression
